Top 5 Tips for Cloning Successfully

Cloning cannabis plants is an essential practice every cultivator should master. In this post, we explore the top 5 tips for cloning cannabis plants to ensure you are maximizing yields and cannabinoid production.

#1 Be Sterile

Your entire work area and every tool used in the cloning process must be clean. Use disposable gloves when handling any surface or plant. Sterilize your tools, work area, and containers with bleach, hydrogen peroxide, or rubbing alcohol.

#2 Use Clone Domes

High humidity levels are crucial for freshly cut clones. Plants without a thriving root system retain nourishment through foliar absorption (feeding through the leaves). As a result, clone domes are a no-brainer. These plastic containers cover cloning trays to retain moisture while the plants develop roots. When using a clone dome, you can expect roots in days rather than the weeks you’d have to wait without a dome.

#3 Use Measurement Instruments for Humidity and Temperature

Optimizing your grow environment is crucial for clone development. We recommend a temperature of 68-77°F with relative humidity between 75 and 90%. These measurements should accommodate all cannabis plants; however, we recommend gaining strain-specific insights to maximize development.

#4 Make Sure Clones are Clean Before Taking Cuts

Limiting contamination goes beyond your grow equipment and work area. Ensuring you aren’t spreading bacteria requires cleaning your actual clones as well.

One of the most popular methods of cleaning clones is ‘dipping.’ This involves dunking them into a pesticide solution with water before transferring them into a new medium.

#5 Make Sure Rooting Your Rooting Media and Solution are Compatible

Your rooting media and plant nutrients must be suited for propagation. For example, you don’t want to plant cuttings into fertilizer-rich soil. For a compatible nutrient, we suggest a cloning solution, one of the most popular is Clonex. This clone-specific blend of nutrients and minerals is designed to not be too harsh for seedlings or clones. For a rooting medium, you have several options. Every grower will swear by their specific media, but there are many suitable choices.  The goal is water retention, air circulation, nutrient retention, and drainage.

We suggest the following rooting mediums for clones:

  • Rockwool
  • Coco Coir
  • Soil
  • Water
  • Aeroponics
  • Peat Pellets
